From July 1, 2023, Joom will be required to verify merchants' compliance with the German EPR Law for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), in addition to the German EPR Law for packaging.

To ensure compliance, Joom advises all eligible selling partners to proactively adhere to the regulations. This involves obtaining a WEEE registration number by completing registrations for each brand and category of electronic equipment offered on Joom.de

What is the law about?

The main aim of the law is to ensure the proper handling, recycling, and disposal of such products while holding manufacturers and merchants responsible for their lifecycle. It applies to all Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE), unless explicitly exempted by law. Your products are considered EEE if they are designed for use with alternating current up to 1,000 volts or direct current up to 1,500 volts and meet the following criteria:

• These devices require electric currents or electromagnetic fields to function correctly.
• These devices are used in the generation, transfer, and measurement of electric currents and electromagnetic fields.

This includes products that use batteries if they meet the mentioned criteria. However, standalone batteries are regulated by the German Batteries Act and are not covered by this law.

What product categories are affected by this law?

• Heat Exchangers: refrigerators, air conditioners, boilers. 
• Screens, monitors, and devices with a screen area over 100 square centimeters: screens, TV sets, notebooks, laptops. 
• Lamps: fluorescent lamps, LED lamps. 
• Large Appliances: washing machines, E-bikes. 
• Small Appliances: toasters, clocks, kettles. 
• Small IT and Telecommunication Devices: mobile phones, GPS devices, routers, network cables.

How to prove your compliance with the law?

Anyone manufacturing, first-time selling, or importing EEE in Germany must register with the Stiftung EAR. This registration is mandatory to obtain a Stiftung EAR registration number. The registration number must be provided when selling the product and included on invoices, as required by the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act.

How to provide this information?

STEP 1

If you have a branch in Germany

If you are a producer with a branch in Germany, you must fulfill all obligations and do the following:

1. Sign up with Stiftung EAR as a producer to obtain your Stiftung EAR registration number. Please refer to this page to learn more. 
2. Register all your brands and categories for electronic equipment with Stiftung EAR before offering them in Germany. Please refer to this page to learn more about it.

If you don’t have a branch in Germany

If you are a producer without a branch in Germany, you need to contact one of the following legal entities to receive a registration number: 

• Envenance
• Take-e-way
• Bitkom Servicegesellschaft
• Others

Your authorized legal entity will be responsible for fulfilling your legal obligations as a producer in Germany. To meet these obligations, you need to appoint an authorized legal entity according to the Stiftung EAR guidance.

STEP 2

1. Once you receive your registration number on the Stiftung EAR Portal, please go to the EPR Germany for Electronics page in your Merchant panel.
2. Fill in the following fields:

What happens if you do not comply with the law?

Joom is required by law to verify your compliance with the German WEEE EPR obligations. If you fail to comply, Joom will impose a ban on selling EEE products to Germany. 

To continue selling your products in Germany, you must ensure that you fulfill the mentioned obligations before October 1, 2023, to comply with the German EPR law.
